It’s official: the 2024 professional golf season is just around the corner, and golf shoe fanatics are on high alert as many brands announce their latest styles and innovations for the year. We’re seeing a lot of popular shoe styles among the pros transitioning into the 2024 season, but one shoe in particular caught our attention during the WM Phoenix Open.
There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming Puma golf shoe: the new Phantomcat Nitro ($179.99), which will go on sale in five days. But it’s really been no secret since Justin Suh (very subtly) first debuted this new shoe (and new spike technology) in Cabo San Lucas last November. Plus, Puma also gave everyone a first look at this at the PGA Show in Orlando.
The Phantomcat Nitros are a *Innovative* spiked version of Puma’s popular 2023 spikeless model: the Alphacat Nitros, which was released last March. Check out the images above and below for a sneak peek at the new Phantomcat Nitro spikes. These are spikes like we’ve never seen on a golf shoe before, but we’ll talk more about the spike innovation in a moment.
Based on Dick’s Sporting Goods golf launch calendar, this shoe will be available in four color optionsbut Justin Suh has only attracted himself two versions so far in public opinion. Until Round 1, which entered the second round of the WMPO, we had only seen the white-black-orange color scheme that Suh also wore in Hawaii at the Sony Open (which is also the same color scheme that Puma debuted at the 2024 PGA Show in Orlando last month). But yesterday at the WM Phoenix Open, Suh wore a white version with yellow spikes to reveal another colorway (see image above).
More about the new spike technology
At the PGA Show in Orlando, I spoke with a Puma designer representative who gave me some insight into the reasoning behind this unprecedented spike design. To put it simply, this new technology and design helps improve traction by targeting the key parts of the foot that connect to the ground during a golf swing.
The Phantomcat spikes are intentionally designed and placed where golfers need to shift their weight on their feet during a well-executed swing. The combination of the spikes fused into the sole and the wide spike design gives golfers increased traction as they shift their weight in rotation.
These shoes will be available in men’s sizes 7 through 15, and according to the Puma representative, there are currently no plans to release a women’s version of this shoe, or even a women’s shoe in general with this spike technology. So if you are a lady with a foot smaller than a woman’s, size 9, you are currently out of luck to try this new shoe. I share your disappointment.
To that point, before we get into the rest of the cool shoes we saw at WMPO this weekend, I’ll give you one of my two favorite women’s golf shoes with spikes. feel free to offer your size —I am familiar with both the Adidas ZG23 and the FootJoy HyperFlex.
We saw more professional shoes at WM Phoenix Open
A competitive and entertaining weekend, we can continue to consider “The Greatest Show on Grass” to be just that. In addition to a great show, we also enjoyed the styles on the track at TPC Scottsdale. Here are a few pros and their shoes that caught our eye this weekend.
Nick Taylor secured victory at the WM Phoenix Open, ending up in a playoff between himself and Charley Hoffman, taking home approximately $1.58 million for first place. Nick Taylor was a popular (and victorious) pick and was also the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open since 1954. Big congratulations to Nick Taylor who is making waves for Canada.
Sporting an antique Adidas golf shoe originally released in 2011, Nick Taylor felt confident in the Adidas Innolux 2.0 shoes. Tap here shop for new Adidas golf shoes.
Once you use BOA shoelace technology, it’s really hard to go back to laces. Charley Hoffman absolutely rocked his green outfit with these FootJoy HyperFlex BOA shoes.
Without laces, you can secure these shoes with a dial at the back, making the shoes comfortable and easy to tighten around your feet.
FootJoy HyperFlex BOA
HyperFlex BOA golf shoes for men are specially tailored to the modern golfer. Hyper-powerful with a specially shaped and integrated thermoplastic side wrap and saddle, this innovative design wraps around your foot to provide the perfect balance of control and stability during your swing while providing all-day walking comfort. HyperFlex features tuned running cushioning, extra ankle padding and an innovative, breathable, waterproof knit upper so you can play at the highest level.
Leading the tournament for most of the weekend, Sahith Theegala tends towards a more casual look – this guy likes a lightweight hoodie on the course – but he’s taken that look to the next level with these waterproof leather golf shoes.
Sahith Theegala combined his understated look with the Pro|SL Sport from FootJoy in black. These shoes are also available in white/navy and white/black.
FootJoy Pro|SL Carbon style from last season
$129.95 (was $159.99)
We’ve made the best even better with increased rearfoot stability by adding a second carbon insert in the heel area of the shoe. The result: increased stability and improved energy return with every step between shots. FJ, the #1 shoe in golf.
Paired with a Nike waffle-knit hoodie, Scottie Scheffler’s outfit was casual and cool. The white Nike hat matched his TW ’20 shoes (which are no longer in stock).
Now that the TW ’20s are no longer in stock, the Tiger Woods ’13 shoes are a perfect alternative to the ’20s. Check out this cool colorway with green accents.
